Hey Patreons! I’m still getting the hang of the way Patreon works, but I figured the first thing I’d share as a members-only exclusive would be a round-up of what I’m reading, watching and listening to at the moment. Let me know what you think in the comments below!
I’ve always loved reading, but it’s almost exclusively for learning as I’ve struggled reading non-fiction ever since I was a kid. Having the “Read the All-Time Greatest Books” on my 101 Things list set the challenge to change that, and when I bought a Kindle about 4 years back I made a concerted effort to learn to appreciate more literature. The challenges of working & travelling around the world this year meant my Kindle spent a lot of this year uncharge in my pack, and when I finally charged it on the way back to Australia I found the screen had been crushed! Luckily someone gave me a new kindle as an early Xmas present, so I’m back into it again each night before bed.
by Werner Herzog – “Grizzly Man” was the only Herzog film I’d seen before starting this, but now that I’m reading about his filmmaking I better understand what he’s trying to achieve. Much like I’ve never read any of Stephen King’s but adored “On Writing” because it showed me how to improve my own writing, “A Guide For The Perplexed” makes me want to watch Werner Herzog’s films so I can learn how to be a better storyteller through film myself.
by David Michie – I’ve always enjoyed the way David Michie blends Buddist teachings and Tibetan culture with humour and unique perspectives, and the Dalai Llama’s Cat is the best example of that. This is the third book in the series focusing on meditation, and it’s not leaving me many excuses for my own lapsed practice!
-This was really unexpected, because while I love South Park I also mostly stopped watching TV years ago. Someone mentioned SpaceX & Elon Musk had featured in a Season 20 episode so I watched it, but had NO idea what was going on – apparently at the start of Season 19 the creators started to write persistent storylines, so I went back and watched from Season 19 forward. Wow… completely blown away by just how sharp the political satire was, and the show is vastly improved with the new structure. If you haven’t watched South Park in a few years, I’d recommend going back to Season 19 like I did – it’s worth it.
– This. Just. Just go see it. It’s an incredible movie from start to finish, it will blow your mind, and hopefully change the way you see the world in the process.
– Now my SECOND Werner Herzog film, and one that is especially interesting to me looking at our human relationship with technology (specifically the internet). Two men I’ve always been intrigued by – Elon Musk and Kevin Mitnick – both feature, and it’s an interesting perspective on things… especially now I know from Guide for the Perplexed that you shouldn’t trust any facts or figures he narrates in his films!
I seem to be going through a real “soundtrack” phase at the moment, which is really messing with my song recommendations when I’m looking for something higher energy when I go for a run!
by Jóhann Jóhannsson – Obviously!
by Christophe Beck – I rewatched Edge of Tomorrow recently and didn’t realise how amazing and unnerving the soundtrack is! It’s actually pretty good to run to though, but scary as hell to have playing when you come back to an empty house at night!
